Now You Can Pursue a PhD Alongside Your Job: No Coursework Required

Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, higher education institutions in Madhya Pradesh have introduced part-time PhD programmes, creating new opportunities for working professionals to pursue doctoral research while continuing their jobs. The initiative aims to make research more flexible, practical, and employment-oriented, allowing candidates to balance professional responsibilities with academic advancement without the burden of traditional full-time coursework.

Several prominent institutions - including Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV), Indian Institute of Information Technology (Triple IT), National Law Institute University (NLIU), MANIT, and the Forensic University - have implemented part-time PhD options this year. These programmes are designed to benefit professionals such as academicians, engineers, scientists, and IT experts, enabling them to contribute to advanced research without leaving their careers.

At Indian Institute of Information Technology (Triple IT), PhD programmes are offered in fields such as Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, Mathematics, and Physics. A major innovation is the acceptance of NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) online courses as an alternative to conventional classroom coursework. NPTEL, an initiative by IITs and IISc, provides free online courses in technical and academic subjects. With these courses now recognised, research scholars can fulfil academic requirements remotely and avoid regular on-campus classes.

Overall, the new structure reflects a shift toward technology-enabled and flexible doctoral education, making it easier for professionals to pursue high-level research while maintaining employment and contributing to innovation and skill development.
